First Woman Rabbi in Italy Progressive Judaism in Calabria
As all of you know, I'm proud to be your Vice president, an Italian American and a person of the Jewish faith. Featured in the summer issue of "Italian American", Summer 2007 on page 4 is an article about Rabbi Barbara Aiello an Italian American who's family came here from Calabria in Lamezia Terme, near Catanzaro. Calabria was once 50% Jewish.
Since prior to the fall of the Second Temple, those of the Jewish faith have lived in Rome and indeed all of Italy. The first Christians were Jewish 250 years prior to the creation of the Roman Catholic Church.
Us Italians are a unique group of people once divided by war and united in the mid 19th century thanks to the military efforts of Giuseppe Garibaldi.
If it wasn't for the brilliance of Italian philosophy, Cicero, Machavelli, Mazzei and the bravery of those seeking a new world away from Europe's dominance, we a people united by individuality would never had the privilege to enjoy the prosperity and opportunity of America (From Americas Vespucci.)
Our history is amazing, this is why we as a people must promote our heritage here in America based upon Judeo/Christian principles.

Rabbi Barbara speaks Italian and is a first generation American whose family originates in Italy. Her father, Antonio Aiello was raised in Calabria in the small mountain village of Serrastretta in the Province of Catanzaro, and worked with the Partigiani (Italian Partisans) during World War II.
